Woman pleads guilty to misdemeanor driving while intoxicated in Norfolk

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A 40-year-old woman pleaded guilty to eluding police in February after being discovered asleep at the wheel with the gear in drive while intoxicated.

On Feb. 9, Norfolk Police patrol officers noticed Charlotte Elizabeth Beckley’s car stopped and holding up traffic at the intersection of Church Street and East Virginia Beach Boulevard at approximately 2:45 a.m. The officers parked their patrol cars around Beckley’s car, and they found her slumped over her steering wheel asleep with her foot on the brake while the car was still running and the gear was in drive.

The officers attempted to wake Beckley up for several minutes by repeatedly knocking on her window and yelling. When Beckley woke up, her car rolled forward. The officers told her to put her car in park, but she continued driving forward, pushed a patrol car out of the way and fled down Church Street. The officers returned to their cars and pursued Beckley until she stopped driving at a construction site at the intersection of Church and Bute streets…
