Motorists and boaters using the George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge on Route 17 in York County should expect delays. The bridge connects Yorktown and Gloucester Point across the York River. Due to mechanical problems, the bridge must now be opened manually. This process adds 25 to 40 minutes to each opening. As a result, total opening times are now between 45 and 60 minutes.
These longer openings are required by federal rules from the United States Coast Guard. The rules state that the bridge must open for marine vessels when needed. Usually, boat operators do not need to give advance notice. However, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is asking for two hours’ notice during this period. This helps VDOT manage extra staffing and coordination.
VDOT is working on repairs. Temporary fixes are being planned to shorten opening times. A long-term solution is also in development. Until repairs are complete, the manual process will continue to affect both road and water traffic…
