Hampton woman overcomes drug addiction, becomes counselor and filmmaker

HAMPTON, Va. — Sheryl Shake Riddick spent more than two decades battling addiction and cycling through treatment programs and homelessness. Today, she’s celebrating something she said she never imagined during her darkest years— one feature film already released on Amazon Prime Video and Tubi, and a second that’s now complete.

The 64-year-old said she grew up in Norfolk’s Campostella neighborhood, surrounded by what she described as a tight-knit, education-focused family. As a child, she dreamed of being an actress. But in adulthood, she said crack cocaine took over her life for years.

“Things got off track… As I got older, got into drugs… [it] spanned over [a] 25 [year] period,” Shake Riddick said. “It took a lot of rehabs, a lot of, um, homelessness, actually. I went through a lot.”…
