NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Newport News School Board voted Tuesday to increase their own salaries, effective on Jan. 1, 2027.
The chair’s salary will increase from $17,000 to $27,000 a year, according to the resolution the School Board passed on Tuesday. The rest of the board members will see a bump from $15,000 to $25,000 a year.
“It’s been close to 20 years since the School Board has received any salary increase or any increase in stipend,” said Board Member Douglas Brown. “Cost of living has gone up considerably. The cost of running for School Board has gone up. The cost of being on School Board and the community demands of being a School Board member have gone up, but the salaries have not for nearly 20 years.”…
