Virginia man dies as result of self-inflicted gunshot wound in Northampton County

On Sunday, Dec. 14, at approximately 1:59 p.m., Northampton County Sheriff’s Office deputies were notified by Northampton County Central Communications that Halifax County Central Communications received a stolen motor vehicle hit from their Flock License Plate Reader. The stolen motor vehicle was leaving Halifax County and entering into Northampton County in Gaston.

A local officer with a local municipality responded to assist and located the stolen motor vehicle and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The operator of the stolen motor vehicle drove away and turned into a motel on NC Highway 46 near Interstate 95. The occupant of the stolen motor vehicle, later identified as 50-year-old, Richard Charles Frey, of Newport News Virginia, fled from the vehicle. A short time later one gunshot was heard and Frey was located and suffered from a single self-inflicted gunshot wound. Frey was transported to a local hospital and later succumbed to his injury.

Later, deputies were notified that Richard Charles Frey had outstanding warrants out of James City County, Virginia, for bank robbery…
