VIRGINIA, USA — Holiday celebrations are ramping up across Hampton Roads; law enforcement agencies are increasing patrols and DUI enforcement, warning drivers that impaired driving remains one of the deadliest risks this time of year.
Norfolk police say they are joining agencies statewide in a holiday DUI prevention push, focused on stopping impaired drivers before a crash happens. The campaign comes as officers and troopers say they are seeing troubling trends on Virginia roadways.
“It feels like the numbers are increasing,” said Virginia State Police Trooper Michael LeSage. “We certainly see a lot of DUI crashes and certainly stops and things like that, but we encounter a lot of them in crashes. And unfortunately, a lot of them don’t end well.”
