Newport News mother and son sentenced for illegal gun purchases

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A Newport News mother and son were sentenced Tuesday for purchasing 23 firearms without a license and having several be used in crimes involving a gang.

Devonte Jermaine Kelley, 24, and Lalita Jane Owens, 45, used online marketplace Armslist to arrange private firearms sales and facilitate illegal transactions. According to court documents, Kelley partook in the dealing of 23 firearms with a value of at least $12,117.24.

In addition, Owens bought 16 of the 23 firearms before Kelley’s 21st birthday when he could not legally purchase handguns…
