Local reaction to death of Rev. Jesse Jackson

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – The civil rights activist and two-time presidential candidate Jesse Jackson has died at the age of 84. His family shared the news of his death in a statement.

He was best known for his activism, working alongside Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Many in Hampton Roads are reacting to Jackson’s death.

“He empowered our community. I mean, his chants were always, ‘I am somebody,’ don’t let anyone put you down because you are someone,” said Hampton NAACP President Gaylene Kanoyton. “He always opened up the doors [so] that you can do anything that you want.”

His family shared the news about his passing in a statement: “His unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and human rights helped shape a global movement for freedom and dignity.”…
