Norfolk murder suspect now focus of international manhunt

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Commonwealth’s Attorney Ramin Fatehi has had to use a rare method in the search for a Navy reservist wanted for murder in the death of his wife.

The body of Lina Guerra, 39, was found Feb. 5 at the downtown apartment she shared with her husband, David Varela, 38. The body of Guerra (also known as Lina Maria Guerra Echavaria), who was shorter than 5 feet tall, was found in a freezer in the 19th floor apartment of the ICON building.

Family of Guerra hadn’t heard from her for more than two weeks when police found her dead. A relative had told 10 On Your Side the couple’s two-year marriage was violent and Guerra had sustained bruises.

Varela, an active duty Navy reservist assigned to a cargo handling unit in Williamsburg, has been charged with first-degree murder and concealing a body…
