‘Christmas in February’ brings food, clothes, bikes, and hope to Newport News, but grassroots groups still need support

NORFOLK, Va. — On Saturday, families and individuals walked through tables stacked with toys, bicycles, warm coats, and boxes of food at the Legacy of Hope Foundation in Newport News. The “Christmas in February” event, held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., was designed to spread joy and provide much-needed essentials to members of the community.

Organizers from two nonprofit groups, Be Blessed Be A Blessing Outreach and The Legacy of Hope Foundation, say the event goes beyond handouts. It’s about building community, empowering families, and addressing gaps left by tightening traditional funding streams.

“We feed people,” said Dr. Florence Okonkwo-Kozoyed Bongiorno, founder of Be Blessed Be a Blessing Outreach. “Everyone deserves to eat. Everyone deserves to have the simple things in life: food, clothing, and housing.”…
