VDOT implements long-term traffic shift on I-64 West near LaSalle Avenue

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) – Westbound traffic on Interstate 64 near LaSalle Avenue (exit 265A) is scheduled to move into a long-term traffic shift starting as early as Tuesday, Feb. 24. Contractor crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation will shift both westbound lanes to newly constructed outside lanes as part of the Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL) project.

This shift is a component of the HREL Newport News Segment, which involves lane conversions and infrastructure updates across an 11.5-mile stretch of the interstate. The work follows a similar traffic pattern change implemented on the eastbound side of I-64 at the same location last week.

To implement the shift, traffic on I-64 west between Armistead Avenue and the I-664 interchange will be reduced to one lane. This restriction is scheduled to take place from 9 p.m. Tuesday until 5 a.m. Wednesday. During these hours, the following ramps will be closed:

  • Off-ramp from I-64 west to LaSalle Avenue (exit 265A)
  • On-ramp from Armistead Avenue to I-64 west
  • Off-ramp from I-64 west to I-664 (exit 264)

Signed detours will be provided for motorists impacted by the closures.

Virginia Department of Transportation officials reminded drivers to use caution when traveling through work zones. Motorists should obey posted speed limits, follow barrier guides and be alert to digital message signs. VDOT also encourages drivers to use the 511 Virginia traffic tools or the Waze GPS app to check for up-to-date road conditions before traveling…
