Newport News schools propose budget with pay increase but higher insurance costs

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Newport News School Board on Tuesday got its first look at a proposed budget for the school system for the upcoming fiscal year.

The budget includes a 6.5% increase in the requested city contribution to the budget. The budget would ask employees to pay more toward their health insurance premiums, but there is a modest pay increase for employees in the budget as well.

Like every year, school officials must create and present a budget based on the governor’s proposed state budget, which will not be approved until the middle of March, and then make potential adjustments afterward…
