Gov. Spanberger wants to hear from teachers, parents and students on state of education

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Gov. Abigail Spanberger launched her “Commonwealth Listening Tour” Wednesday as part of her day one directive to commit to academic excellence in public education.

Spanberger, (D-Va.), who took office in January as the state’s 75th and first female governor, toured the specialized classrooms of Bethel High School before sitting down with local administrators, educators, parents and students to gather feedback from them about their experiences, including challenges and successes facing their schools.

She was also joined by Secretary of Education Dr. Jeffery Smith, the former superintendent of Hampton City Schools, and Superintendent of Public Instruction Jenna Conway, who are both charged with shepherding the tour and providing a report when complete…
