Newport News man sentenced to 10 years and three months in prison for drug-related charges

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A man from Newport News was sentenced to 10 years and three months in prison for possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking Wednesday, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia.

In 2025, Kenneth Matthews, 48, sold large quantities of narcotics in the Tidewater area that he received in Maryland. On July 12, 2025, the Virginia State Police (VSP) conducted a traffic stop on Matthews’s vehicle. The vehicle was searched after a narcotics canine detected narcotics’ presence. Investigators recovered more than 300 grams of fentanyl, a handgun and around $1,000.
