Beloved Chesapeake man killed in vehicle driven by suspected drunk driver

PORTSMOUTH,Va. (WAVY) — On Oct. 28, 1997, Daniel Lamar Savage was born with a bang. Apparently, too anxious to wait for doctors, the little one was delivered at home in Norfolk by his father, Clarence Savage, who served in the United States Navy.

Daniel Savage was a joy to the entire family, as he excelled in sports at Western Branch High School in Chesapeake and he worked at a local shipyard. But Savage’s life ended suddenly during the early morning hours of March 14, when he was the passenger in a vehicle crash just after 2 a.m. in the 2600 block of Elmhurst Lane in Portsmouth.

That was when tow truck operator Gregory Elliott was wrapping up a long day and was headed home. He described what happened:

“I was doing another police call, and I came off the interstate and Greenwood [Drive] and Garwood [Avenue], and when I came around the corner, a vehicle was behind me and I pulled over because I thought there was someone trying to get some things out of the vehicle that I was towing. I didn’t know who it was. So I turned, they came past me, and I heard a loud crash, but I thought it was on the interstate.

“But when I came this way to go home, I saw the officer blocking the road. And when I looked in the woods right there, I saw a vehicle on the side. I told the officer that vehicle [a Jeep Wrangler] just came past me, not even 15, 20 minutes ago.”…
