City of Newport News offers free flood resilience assessments

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – The City of Newport News is preparing to launch the FloodREADY Homes Program. It will offer free resilience assessments for eligible homeowners.

In some areas of Newport News, flooding has been an ongoing challenge. More than 3,600 acres of land are prone to flooding, and 1,200 properties are at risk of repetitive flood and loss damages.

The FloodREADY Homes program will offer homeowners a no-cost resilience assessment to find cost-effective ways to protect their homes. This is a three-year initiative by the city with a study that will look at 250 homes located in high flood risk neighborhoods and give homeowners recommendations.
