Family: Man suspected of killing wife in custody after international search

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — David Varela, the man suspected of killing his wife after she was found dead in a downtown Norfolk apartment, is in custody following an international search, a member of her family and FBI Director Kash Patel has confirmed.

The family of Lina Guerra, who was unresponsive in a freezer in their 19th floor apartment at the Icon Norfolk Apartments at 321 East Main Street, said Varela is in San Francisco, but they were told he’s going to be taken back to Virginia.

FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed Guerra’s capture after he noted Varela “had been on the run for over two months.”

He said the “FBI is announcing the successful overseas apprehension of David Varela, a 38-year-old Navy Reservist who is wanted for first-degree murder in connection with the death of his wife, Lina Guerra.  Lina’s body was found inside a freezer in their Norfolk apartment.”

Varela, an active-duty Navy reservist, was charged with first-degree murder and concealing a body in connection to the homicide of the 39-year-old Guerra. An autopsy from the medical examiner determined the cause of her death to be a homicide…
