Mother falls for apparent social media-based real estate scam

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — With three children, three morkies, a German shepherd and a fiance, Christine Cormier’s family is having a tough time finding adequate housing.

She thought she had nailed the perfect home in Newport News: a three bedroom, two-and-a-half-bathroom home that’s near an elementary school and a pet park. Via apps, she sent a deposit to a so-called landlord she met via Facebook Marketplace, only to learn the hard way she had been duped in what appears to be a real estate scam.

“I don’t know what I’m supposed to do,” Cormier said with tears in her eyes. “I was trying to make things better and lost everything.”…
