HAMPTON, Va., (WAVY) — Traffic lanes will shift and close near exit 261 on Interstate 64 as early as May 17 when Virginia Department of Transportation crews begin the next phase of bridge rehabilitation near Hampton Roads Center Parkway. This is part of VDOT’s construction of the Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL) Newport News Segment.
Crews will close one inside lane on I-64 West near the parkway, reducing lanes from four to three and shifting traffic to the right, toward the outside of the highway, according to VDOT.
After this phase is complete, the outside lane will close, and traffic will shift to the inside of the highway. Construction is scheduled for completion in this area in fall 2026. Similar work occurred on I-64 East in this location in 2025.
Weather and schedules could impact the project. Please use caution when traveling near the construction zone. Obey speed limits, follow lane marks and barriers, and pay attention to digital message signs…
