Colonial Williamsburg Is Restoring Historic Gardens At The Governor’s Palace

Ever heard of lawn bowling? Many people haven’t.

It’s a recreational game that was popular with colonial elites, played on a carefully maintained grass court known as a bowling green. The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and the Garden Club of Virginia are working to restore the Governor’s Palace Bowling Green and the adjacent orchard, returning the landscape to the original vision of renowned landscape architect Arthur Shurcliff.

“Restoring the Bowling Green is one step toward a larger initiative to return the Palace Gardens to their full grandeur,” Jack Gary, the foundation’s associate vice president of historic resources said…
