Chesapeake Implements Single-Bin Trash and Recycling Program

Beginning July 27, 2026, the City of Chesapeake is partnering with the Southeastern Public Service Authority (SPSA) to implement a single-bin trash and recycling system for residents.

Under the new program, residents will no longer need to separate recyclables. All household waste, including recyclable materials, can be placed in one bin for collection. Collected materials will be transported to the expanded AMP Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) advanced processing facility in Portsmouth, where technology will sort recyclables from waste.

The regional initiative, known as SPSA SORT (Separating Organics, Recycling and Trash), uses cameras, robotics and artificial intelligence to identify and separate recyclable materials, organic waste and trash.
