VSP: Overturned trailer shuts down northbound lanes of MMMBT

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – An overturned trailer caused delays at the Monitor Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel (MMMBT) Tuesday morning.

Virginia State Police said a pick-up truck pulling a trailer was traveling northbound on I-664 when wind caused the trailer to “sway and overturn.” No injuries were reported.

According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), all north lanes were closed at the MMMBT due to the crash. A detour was put in place at College Drive. All lanes have since reopened.

Photos from the scene show the pick-up truck blocking all lanes, as well as traffic stopped before the bridge.

Initially, VSP said the crash involved two vehicles and that injuries were reported, but have since retracted both of those statements.

Police said speed and alcohol were not contributing factors in the incident.
