Portsmouth man sentenced to 15 years for federal drug trafficking, gun crimes

NORFOLK, Va. — A convicted felon was sentenced to 15 years in prison on federal charges of possession with intent to distribute cocaine and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

Using confidential sources, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) said it learned 51-year-old Steven Frederick James of Portsmouth was using three homes to traffic narcotics in the Hampton Roads area.

In March of 2024, law enforcement searched the residences — located in Newport News, Virginia Beach, and Portsmouth — as well as James’ vehicle. Across the three locations they recovered loaded handguns, ammunition, digital scales, boxes of Narcan, a kilogram of cocaine, four bags containing 83.74 grams of cocaine and a bag containing 47 tablets of methamphetamine.
