VB council agrees to to let schools use $5.8M for health fund, but it won’t reduce premiums

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A compromise has been struck between the Virginia Beach City Council and the Virginia Beach School Board regarding the school division’s health insurance crisis.

City Council appears poised to approve a $5.8 million one-time payment in order to help replenish the division’s health insurance fund. The fund, used to pay claims for the self-insured school division, has dropped to “dangerously low” levels, according to division leaders.

Since 2022, the fund had not only been used to pay medical expenses, but $19 million was also used to buy down healthcare premiums for the 7,800 Virginia Beach City Public Schools employees…
