As e-bikes rise in popularity, the factors of risks continue to grow, now resulting in more and more hazards on the streets. More people are drawn into these modern electric bikes; however, many do not understand the potential dangers. The matter is, should harsher rules be enforced?
Since at least 2024, e-bikes have begun to popularize in Virginia Beach and can commonly be spotted on public streets, sidewalks, the oceanfront boardwalk and other routes. However, since their increase in popularity, many incidents have occurred.
For instance, on October 31, 2025, 47-year-old David German was driving along Cypress Avenue. Authorities said that based on their investigations, the man had been driving on his e-bike when it ran off of the roadway and crashed into a light pole. German was then taken to a hospital where he later passed away due to his injuries…
