Virginia Beach EMS warns of ice hazards as winter weather persists

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Amid the ongoing winter weather, Virginia Beach EMS is warning the community of increasing ice formation which can be especially hazardous to children.

The cold weather has led to ice formation particularly on area ponds and canals. Officials warn that ice-covered waters can be extremely dangerous because the normal ice thickness in Hampton Roads will not support the weight of even a small child.

Common occurrences in ice-related drowning incidents, include children playing on ice, adults attempting to rescue children, adults or a child going onto the ice to rescue a pet that has fallen through the ice and a child or adult slipping on an ice-covered bank and falling into water…
