VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia Beach Police are trying to curb the violence that results from huge crowds of kids at the Oceanfront, focusing on “unpermitted pop-up events” while also calling for earlier curfews for those under 18, with its police chief saying officers, in essence, become babysitters for the city’s youth.
Virginia Beach Police are focusing on what they call “unpermitted pop-up events”. The unpermitted pop-up events are parties advertised on social media, drawing huge crowds of kids to the Oceanfront, usually around spring break. Police say they want to be able to curb the violence that results from them.
“As the weather changes, we get a lot of crowds and sometimes we get unpermitted, unsanctioned events,” said Virginia Beach City Manager Patrick Duhaney at Tuesday’s City Council meeting, “and last year we had several incidents that led to a lot of community concerns and media coverage, and also some business stakeholder concerns,”…
