A Norfolk man has been convicted of shooting at police officers who were trying to arrest him on an outstanding warrant in 2024.
Prosecutors say 27-year-old Markell Troy Taylor was approached by Norfolk Police Officers James Burke and Zachary Humphrey on May 24, 2024, after they recognized him outside a convenience store on East Virginia Beach Boulevard. When the officers confirmed Taylor had an active warrant, they attempted to detain him. Taylor ran, and Officers Burke and Benjamin Thorpe chased him on foot.
During the chase, investigators say Taylor dropped a bag, pulled out a gun and shot at Officer Burke from only a few feet away. Burke dove to the ground to avoid being shot, tearing his ACL in the process. Officers returned fire, hitting Taylor in the leg and torso before taking him into custody…
