Beloved veteran surfer dies after surfing notorious California beach

Friends and fellow wave riders are remembering a 55-year-old San Francisco surfer who died suddenly after surfing in the waters off one of California’s most notorious beaches.

The May 28 incident occurred just before 1:30 p.m. at Ocean Beach near Lincoln Way, according to a news release from the San Francisco Fire Department.

Officials said an off-duty National Park Service lifeguard who was surfing nearby, along with three on-duty Ocean Rescue lifeguards, spotted a surfer, identified as Sandro Ricardo Britz, in distress just beyond the surf line.

Witnesses reported seeing Britz waving his arms above his head, a recognized sign of distress, before rescuers reached him…
