Urban Alchemy Paved Way for Revival
Urban Alchemy’s Tenderloin Oasis closed on June 21. It opened in 2022, on the site of a parking lot at Turk and Hyde whose sidewalks were filled with drug dealers. The Oasis became a hub for Urban Alchemy workers and residents. Along with board games and community tables, it featured a dog park, which the canine-filled neighborhood desperately needed.
The Oasis was City Hall’s most visible move against neighborhood drug activities, much of which the city’s own programs fostered. Its closure raises concerns while reflecting a positive shift in the Tenderloin.
