Rare Golden Gate Bridge fireworks show headlines Bay Area Fourth of July celebrations

To mark the nation’s 250th birthday, San Francisco’s official fireworks show will be launched from the Golden Gate Bridge — only the third time pyrotechnics have ever been set off from the iconic span.

The spectacle is scheduled to begin around 9:30 p.m., offering expanded viewing options as the fireworks launch from the bridge, the Marina Green and Pier 39. Begin the day with parades, afternoon barbecues, live music in parks and other community events. Even if you’re not heading to San Francisco, The Chronicle’s region-by-region guide has you covered.

S.F. Mime Troupe’s ‘Wreckage: A Musical Tragicomedy’

Michael Gene Sullivan directs the 67th incarnation of the left-leaning musical theater group’s traveling summer production, which poses the political question: Does it feel like everything is falling apart? Hallucinating robots, economic collapse, protesting frogs, people praying for the end of the world – this is not the future, or the democracy, we were promised. When it’s all over will there be enough left to build something new from the wreckage? Written by Sullivan and Marie Cartier, with music and lyrics by Daniel Savio.

2 p.m. Friday-Saturday, July 3-4. Continues at various Bay Area locations through Monday, Sept. 7. Free-$20. Dolores Park, 19th and Dolores streets, S.F. 415-285-1717. www.sfmt.org
