Alameda County deputies help 2 children escape house fire

(KRON) — Two Alameda County Sheriff’s Office deputies are being recognized for their quick actions after responding to a house fire in San Lorenzo and helping two children escape the blaze.

Deputy Alex Huang and Deputy Cheyne Abbey-Chong arrived at the June 13 residential fire in the 1600 block of Bandoni Avenue and learned from neighbors that the home’s residents were not responding and might be inside the burning house. One neighbor was able to reach the residents by phone, who said they were away, but their two children — ages 12 and 14 — were at home.

“Deputies Huang and Abbey-Chong tried repeatedly to kick the front door in but were unsuccessful,” the sheriff’s office wrote. “They quickly moved to the rear of the house, where they used an expandable baton to break a rear sliding glass door to create an entry point.”

The children were able to climb out of the newly created opening to safety. Alameda County FD firefighters arrived shortly after and rescued the family’s Corgi dog while extinguishing the blaze…
