July 4th fireworks will close the Golden Gate Bridge and Highway 101. Here’s how to get around

The Golden Gate Bridge will, appropriately, be closed to traffic between 9 and 10 p.m. on July 4, so that no cars are scorched when crews launch fireworks over the iconic harp-string towers.

But it shouldn’t be too hard for spectators to find a nearby perch at Crissy Field or northern Embarcadero, especially if they take transit to get there. San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency will run two fireworks shuttles from 4 to 11:30 p.m. One will pick people up at Powell BART Station and proceed along the 38-Geary and 49-Van Ness Muni routes to Marina Middle School at Chestnut and Fillmore streets. The other will start at Embarcadero BART Station and follow the F-Market streetcar line to Pier 39.

Revelers who dare to drive should brace for road closures around Fisherman’s Wharf and the Marina neighborhood, which will largely be restricted to local traffic and emergency vehicles from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Additionally, Jefferson Street will be shut off between Hyde Street and the Embarcadero from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m., with vehicles diverted from Embarcadero onto Beach Street.

Starting at 8 p.m., Caltrans will block traffic leading to the bridge on Highway 101 in both the northern and southern directions. Parking will be in high demand at all bridge lookout points and waterfront neighborhoods of San Francisco.
