Berkeley woman raising money to support family in Venezuela after earthquakes

(KRON) — A Berkeley woman is pleading for help after family members were in Venezuela when back-to-back earthquakes devastated the country. She is now raising money to support them.

Venezuelans are rushing to identify the bodies of their loved ones as earthquake deaths multiply

Benit Avila was born in Venezuela and now lives in Berkeley. She still has relatives in her home country and says no one has seen her two aunts since June 24, before a magnitude 7.5 earthquake — followed by a 7.2 quake — collapsed the building they were in.

In Venezuela, the focus is slowly shifting from rescue to recovery. The United Nations is scaling up aid to the region, but residents say it may not be enough.

Meanwhile, the government is defending what critics have called a slow response to the quakes, saying it is doing what it can with limited resources. The United States is committing more than $300 million in aid, but the estimated cost of the damage is $6 billion…
