What’s the price for a small moment of summer joy? A simple scoop of ice cream, maybe one for everyone in the family?

In typical San Francisco fashion, it costs more than you might expect. To find out exactly how much, we spread across the city to test 16 ice cream options — for research, of course. Based on our sample, we found that San Franciscans typically pay $6 to $8 for a single scoop, not including tax and tip. A family of four can be out more than $30 for an afternoon treat, and that’s before someone demands sprinkles or — wallet forbid — a cherry-topped sundae…
