Mark and Erin Rhoades came from Berkeley to San Francisco’s Fort Mason farmers market Sunday and blasted through it without even a canvas shopping bag. They weren’t there for the produce but to see the dirt that it grows in.
Raw earth from all 50 states is on display in an inventive monthlong exhibition by British environmental artist Andy Goldsworthy. Titled “Red Flags,” it involves 50 canvas flags, each colored by the pigment of earth in one of the 50 states. The free installation takes up the entirety of the massive Gateway Pavilion and is lit only by the sun coming through windows on the waterfront, reflected off stark white walls.
