A 5-year-old boy passed out at the dinner table inside a home on Thornhill Drive in Oakland’s Montclair neighborhood on June 21, and was rushed to the hospital, where doctors intubated him and administered Narcan after determining he had both fentanyl and cocaine in his system, police said. The boy was hospitalized in critical condition from the overdose, according to court records. His mother and her boyfriend have since been charged with felony child abuse in connection with the incident.
According to The Mercury News, the boy’s mother, a 35-year-old Oakland woman, and her boyfriend, a 28-year-old Oakland man, have both pleaded not guilty to the charges. The mother was released from jail without bail, while her boyfriend was released after posting $10,000 bail. Both are due back in court tomorrow, court records show.

Police are still trying to determine exactly how the boy was able to ingest the drugs, the outlet reported. Suspected cocaine and fentanyl were found inside the home, according to court records.
