25-year-old Kimarii McLemore was fatally shot on Friday, July 31, near the Oakland Adult & Career Education Center. The victim lost her life while attending an adult education carpentry class, as revealed by her family members to the local news outlet KTVU. Oakland Police Chief James Beere said that another individual had been injured during the freak shooting episode. On the day of her death, McLemore had texted her mother about a suspicious car in the parking lot.
Victim’s aunt said that McLemore had run into problems with a man in her class
Authorities responded to the 7900 block of MacArthur Boulevard right after 9:00 a.m. after they received a ShotStopper alert, per CBS News. Upon their arrival, they saw that the victim had sustained at least one gunshot wound. Paramedics delivered urgent care but their efforts fell short and McLemore succumbed to her injuries.
The victim’s aunt, Brittia Johnson, later informed the authorities that her niece had been trying to improve her life but felt “scared” in the class because of her alleged dispute with a young man, per KTVU. Johnson said that she had received a call from the victim’s mother about McLemore’s death.
The 25-year-old’s aunt added that while she did not know for sure who “pulled the trigger,” she had knowledge of her niece feeling unsafe in the presence of an unnamed individual.

In the wake of her untimely passing, McLemore’s brother Tyriq Long noted that the victim was well-regarded. “Usually, when she was around, it was a good time. So, yeah, that’s how I want her to be remembered,” Long said. He also said that he felt inspired by his sister’s attempts to turn her life around, per CBS News.
