Human fetal skin typically does not finish forming its outermost barrier, called the stratum corneum, until closer to 28 to 34 weeks of gestation, according to research published in the Neonatal Intensive Care Journal, which leaves infants born earlier extremely vulnerable to fluid loss, tearing, and infection.
A Fight Measured in Grams and Days
The odds Meadow faced were steep by any clinical measure. National inpatient data analyzed in 2022 found that periviable premature infants weighing more than 500 grams at birth have four to five times higher odds of survival than those weighing 500 grams, or about 1.1 pounds, or less, according to research published by PubMed Central. Broader federal data underscore just how much is at stake for babies like her: preterm births account for one in 10 births in the United States, and preterm birth and low birth weight accounted for about 14% of infant deaths in 2022, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC also notes that preterm babies face high rates of death and disability, especially when born before 32 weeks’ gestation, a threshold that Meadow was well under.
Meadow’s survival was made possible in part by the specialized care available close to home. The NICU at Walnut Creek is operated in partnership with Stanford Medicine Children’s Health, giving Contra Costa County families access to advanced pediatric specialists without having to transfer to a distant academic medical center. A premature baby is generally defined as one born before 37 weeks’ gestation, but the level of intervention required for a micro-preemie like Meadow, born at the extreme edge of viability, calls for the kind of subspecialty intensive care, continuous mechanical ventilation, and advanced life support that only a Level III NICU can provide, per the American Academy of Pediatrics’ classification standards.
