San Francisco has lost another well-known dining destination after Leo’s Oyster Bar permanently closed, marking the end of a decade-long run for the acclaimed seafood restaurant and cocktail bar.
The closure comes just months after owner Anna Weinberg filed for personal bankruptcy, underscoring the financial pressures continuing to reshape the restaurant industry even for once-thriving establishments.
A celebrated restaurant comes to an end
Located in San Francisco’s Financial District, Leo’s Oyster Bar opened in 2016 and quickly gained a reputation for its stylish mid-century-inspired décor, seafood towers, oysters, caviar and craft cocktails. The restaurant became one of the signature venues of the Big Night Restaurant Group, alongside popular restaurants including Marlowe and Park Tavern.
According to Weinberg, the restaurant’s lease expired on July 1, and changing personal circumstances made renewing the space impractical. She said she hopes another operator will eventually bring new life to the location.
Bankruptcy follows mounting financial challenges
The closure comes after Weinberg filed for bankruptcy in May, reporting less than $50,000 in assets while listing significant debts, including approximately $37,000 in credit card balances. She has also been involved in multiple legal disputes over unpaid bills and business agreements, including a court judgment exceeding $1 million in a breach-of-contract case.
