‘Avoid the water’: California beaches to see hazardous conditions this weekend

Distant hurricanes will send energetic waves toward the California coast Labor Day weekend, raising the risk of dangerous rip currents and sneaker waves.

The National Weather Service issued a beach hazards statement from 6 a.m. Friday to 11 p.m. Monday for Pacific beaches in the Bay Area, warning of waves up to 10 feet with long periods between them.

“These waves aren’t very intimidating if you’re on a boat in the open ocean, but the long period allows them to push much farther up the beach,” the weather service said…
