An Oakland school board member has been on the payroll of the state teachers union for more than a year despite public claims to the contrary, raising renewed questions about the validity of the district’s teacher contract based on violations of California conflict-of-interest laws.
Officials in San Francisco Unified confirmed VanCedric Williams, who is a teacher in the district, has been on paid leave to work full-time as a state director for the California Teachers Association (CTA). While the local district cuts the check for his salary and benefits, the CTA reimburses the city’s school system for all those costs.
