Paul Avery, The Journalist Who Received An Eerie Message From The Zodiac Killer After Writing About The Case

On Oct. 27, 1970, San Francisco Chronicle journalist Paul Avery received a strange card in the mail. It read, “Peek-A-Boo! You Are Doomed!” — and it was signed by the Zodiac Killer.

Avery had been reporting on the mysterious serial killer’s crimes and cryptic letters for over a year, and he’d even tried to track the criminal down himself. And the ominous note wasn’t going to stop him.

Indeed, a month after receiving the Halloween card, Avery wrote an article claiming the Zodiac Killer had fatally stabbed a woman in Riverside, California, back in 1966. While the police never officially linked this murder to the Zodiac, Avery’s work raised questions about whether the killer’s crimes really were limited to the Bay Area…
