A landmark Berkeley brewery is preparing to pour its final beers after four decades in business. Triple Rock Brewery & Taphouse, an institution that helped shape America’s craft-beer movement, is expected to close before the end of 2026.
Berkeley brewery opened in 1986
Brothers John and Reid Martin opened Triple Rock on March 14, 1986, originally calling it Roaring Rock Brewery. The business was among the first five brewpubs to open in the United States after Prohibition and became a major part of Berkeley’s downtown food and beer scene.
Over its 40-year history, Triple Rock brewed 5,884 batches, totaling more than 41,000 barrels and 10 million pints of beer, according to the brewery.
The brewpub also served as an early training ground for brewers who went on to establish other businesses in the craft-beer industry.
Owners are ready to retire
