A group of residents at the upscale Contra Costa County senior community of Rossmoor, best known for its 27 holes of golf, is concerned about a rash of unnerving, hateful incidents there in recent months.
In one, a resident attending a dance sponsored by the Rossmoor Advocates for Diversity gave a middle finger gesture to two men leaving the dance floor together, then looked at them and said, “Disgusting.”
At a Pride Month event by the Rossmoor LGBTQ Alliance in June, a lesbian resident had her tires slashed in the parking lot. And last month, a bulletin board display case sponsored by Voices for Justice in Palestine was vandalized. No charges have been filed in any of the incidents.
While similar tensions have roiled schools, college campuses and workplaces, what’s happening at Rossmoor demonstrates that older communities are not immune from these incidents — even at events celebrating diversity…
