Missing 22-year-old identified as woman found burned beneath Oakland freeway

The death of a 22-year-old woman whose burned remains were found beneath Interstate 580 near the Oakland-Emeryville border is reportedly being investigated as a homicide.

Bailey Kristin Barnett was staying at a transitional home in Oakland when she was reported missing, according to the East Bay Times. Her last known contact with anyone was July 22, police said. But five days later, her body was found badly burned near Hollis Street, not far from the MacArthur Maze.

Barnett was identified using DNA testing. Police are investigating the death as a homicide but have not released Barnett’s cause of death. Detectives are pursuing several leads, including text messages from a man who apparently had just met Barnett, according to the East Bay Times.

A California Highway Patrol officer found Barnett’s remains during a routine inspection after an encampment in the area had been cleared, authorities said. CHP did not immediately return a request for comment.
