A Bay Area author began writing this novel decades ago. Then he let the animals talk

Kirk Lombard began writing the first lines of his debut novel, “The Shadow Stream,” nearly three decades ago while working at Bay Area group homes and schools for at-risk youth.

On Sundays, Lombard sometimes took his charges fishing and noticed how much they let down their guard and became kids again in that environment. Those trips, starting back in 1999, gave him the inspiration for his fictional story of a troubled teen and the threatened river and wildlife he loves.
