Newsom to ‘surge’ 900% more cops into California’s most crime-ridden, poorly governed city, county

In response to escalating crime rates in Oakland and the East Bay, Governor Gavin Newsom has announced a comprehensive plan to address public safety concerns by deploying 120 California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers to the region. This move, part of a targeted law enforcement surge operation, aims to crack down on various criminal activities, including vehicle theft, retail theft, and violent crime.

The Governor emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “What’s happening in this beautiful city and surrounding area is alarming and unacceptable. I’m sending the California Highway Patrol to assist local efforts to restore a sense of safety that the hardworking people of Oakland and the East Bay demand and deserve.”

The law enforcement surge operation will employ a multi-pronged approach, focusing on auto theft, cargo theft, retail crime, violent crime, and high-visibility traffic enforcement. The CHP officers, equipped with specialized units such as K9s and air support, will be utilizing advanced investigative technology, including license plate readers, to identify and recover stolen vehicles.
