Video: Oakland donut shop robbed in broad daylight

( KRON ) — An Oakland donut shop was robbed in broad daylight and the whole event was caught on camera. The owner said the thief was a familiar customer, leaving staff upset and confused about why he would commit such a crime.

“I am very shaken and mad,” said Sovanna Chan.

Chan and her husband own Dick’s Donuts on High Street in Oakland. She said that on Thursday,
one of their regular customers waited for a pause in the normal hectic rush and came back into the store, crushed the glass front case, and ran off with the cash register.

“There was about $1,300 in cash in there,” Chan said.

KRON4 spoke with Chan on Friday, following up on her social media post about the crime. She said she typically empties the register, but it was a busy morning.

She and her husband opened the donut shop 20 years ago and love being a part of the community, she said.

“My husband and I work seven days a week. We were hit hard in COVID-19,” Chan said.
