A California city bested Seattle, where Starbucks was founded, for best coffee cities in U.S.

Instant coffee with a dash of cream. A cold brew with pumpkin foam. An iced latte with oat milk. It doesn’t matter how you take your java. But it may matter where you get it.

In the same way some cities are known for their literature or history, these cities in America are getting praised for their coffee scene, thanks to WalletHub’s recent Best Coffee Cities in America rankings.

The personal finance company compared 100 of the most populated cities in the country, looking at factors such as the average price of a cappuccino, coffee shops per capita and coffee and tea manufacturers per capita to reveal where coffee lovers may thrive in.

What are the best coffee cities in California?

The best coffee cities in California can be found across the state. San Francisco ranked No. 2 on the list, besting Seattle, Washington, the city where Starbucks was founded.

WalletHub noted that households in San Francisco spend an average of over $280 each year for coffee, the second-most of any city. It’s fellow Bay Area city Fremont where households, on average, spend the most on coffee. San Francisco also boasts the highest percentage of households with an espresso or cappuccino maker. Plus, the city has numerous, affordable coffee shops and bonus, the eighth-most donut shops per capita, said WalletHub.
